Rehabilitation of Roquetas market

Passionate young "Studio M + A_Arquitectura" formed by María González Álvarez and Jose Ramón Santo Marhuenda, presented this project to a competition for the Rehabilitation of the Market of Roquetas de Mar under the name 2x1gastroÁGORA.

A NEW MARKET CONCEPT

As the largest capital markets, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao are no longer the central base for food and beverage marketing in order to become authentic gastronomic and leisurly spaces. What a better place than a market to enjoy the latest culinary trends?

The aim to look for a new market model; a place where people eat, buy and gossip, in which Spaniards do best: living and enjoying community life. A new gourmet market, pertaining to leisure in Roquetas de Mar, and the fusion of two markets into one, offering a full day of activities.

Inside the building, a small urban structure is assembled. Between the existing building and the new architectual structure, unique and splendid scenerios are unfolded for the users of Roquetas de Mar.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

The reformation of the market looks to preserve the existing architectural structures. Its main action/goal is to design a new formal and special arrangement that will break with the traditional idea of a “Mercado de Abastos”. It will facilitate the visualization of the products offered, adjusting the set-up to current needs so as to enhance the users circulation and eliminating architectural barriers.

This Project is looking for constructive and spacial systems that allow the reconfiguration of spaces according to the specific needs of both, the dealer and each type of trade. For example, the market stands are intended to be useful and easily desmantled leaving no trace, so if less metres were needed, more interior spaces could be made.

The New Market aims to:

- Build a community life, understanding the market as an agora for the town of Roquetas de Mar, a public space where social relations and closer ties with neighbors and your own town are fostered. A place where all kinds of gastronomic activities are combined.

- Build a city that has access to the market from any perimetral street. In the same way that one can access the interior of “los Bajos” from differents cities that diverge and reunite in the interior of the market´s plaza.

- Build a landscape with the forest which will help us organize the spaces near the market. The two codes: visual and of colors, are applied in the same way than in ¨los bajos¨, by using the same type of trees.

MATERIALITY: THE ADOPTED SOLUTIONS

Taking into account all the possible variations/changes that the market can suffer, there are some constructive systems that are being looked into in order to allow more freedom, flexibility and reconfiguration of the spaces, according to the specific spacial needs of every situation and of every merchant. The market is resolved with solutions of easy construction, looking for a balance between standardization and adaptability

The young creative Belen Moreno

Belén Moreno is a young Spanish artist born in 1987, currently residing in Sevilla, I carry out her studies in illustration and fine arts at the University of Granada.

In her works unconscious introspection and seize it. Lacking grid planning, emotions, experiences and the need to extrapolate ideas or concepts made pooling, become the protagonists of the piece.

The work and discourse are constantly changing, constantly developing, at the mercy of the visual and sensory perception itself. Requires an understanding not only an accompaniment and peace. Pretending to contact those who observe it, discarding the audience watching without more, staying in the superficial technique.

Without seeking to persuade or educate the viewer in any way, intend that emerges is rather share or infuse reflection, with own personal character. The person facing the work will not know where or what to see, what we put in front of something unknown, but nevertheless would refer to something familiar. We all share an imaginary, to which we attach different meanings in our unconscious. The symbols are universal but can be considered completely free of interpretation, since depending on who you see its meaning changes, your experience changes, the reading changes.

"EDUCATION IS SALVATION"

THE CONCEPT

Child labor is the main concept which this artwork talks about. More specifically it deals with child labor in India.

The vast majority of the carpets in India are made by kids. Since they’re 6 years old and beyond, kids are kidnapped and kept in dreadful conditions. The carpets are done by the kids do to their thin and tiny fingers, since they can make better knots.

FORMALIZATION

When you get to the installation one observes 6 pairs of arms from children coming out of the wall. The arms aren’t full arms, they reach to the elbow. Each one of the arms look as if they were stopped in time and captured as a moment, every pair of hands has a personal expression.

Just bellow and in front of the arms there is a red carpet. The carpet forms a visual triangle between the arms along the wall and the carpet itself, making the installation more three-dimensional. The carpet is frayed in a corner, having red threads coming out of it and tieing the arms together. Each string coming out of the carpet connects a pair of hands acting as if they were handcuffs.

MATERIAL QUALITIES

The hands are made of plaster and plombagina. Plombagina is the dust from graphite, graphite is used for pencils, therefore it’s a metaphor for education from which children are saved from child labor.

The carpet is dyed in red, symbolizing the blood running out of the childrens hands when they’re making the carpets. The thread coming out of them are also red, do to that blood coming out from their hands, from their fingers, which is also what makes the carpet and keeps these children cuffed and tied to this job.
